Released on = January 25, 2007, 10:58 am

Press Release Author = Southern California Writers\' Conference

Industry = Education

Press Release Summary = Over two dozen attendees\' books published over past three
years.

Press Release Body = Founded and run by professional authors devoted to addressing
the needs of writers of every level, the Southern California Writers' Conference has
facilitated over $3 million worth of first-time book and screen over the past 21
years. Renowned for its unique mix of read & critique and troubleshooting
workshops, evening speakers and informal sessions, the SCWC continues to distinguish
itself from the majority of similar events by having on staff publishing
professionals whose commitment to shepherding participants' work to publication
extends far beyond a mere weekend gathering.

Held in San Diego, Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California, a sampling of recent
SCWC conferees' success include: Stacey O'Brien\'s "Wesley the Owl" (Simon &
Schuster, 2008), Mark Thomkins' "Illuminations: Expressions of the Personal
Spiritual Experience" (Celestial Arts/Ten Speed Press), Anna Gilson's "A Valentine
Carol" (Lifetime movie-of-the-week), Frederick Ramsay's "Artscape," "Secrets" and
"Impulse" (Poisoned Pen Press), Blaine C. Readler's "A God for the Earth" (Sense of
Wonder Press) and "Under the Radar" (DNA Press), Justine Musk's "BloodAngel"
(Roc/Penguin) and "Uninvited" (MTV/ Simon & Schuster, 2008), Michele Scott's "Murder
Uncorked" and "Saddled with Trouble" (Berkley Prime Crime) and Raelynn Hillhouse's
"Rift Zone" (Forge Books).

Executive director Michael Steven Gregory, an accomplished writer and filmmaker,
attributes much of the SCWC's success to its sense of community. "Writing is about
the only business where one must measure success most often by the quality of your
rejection," he explained, "Too many aspiring writers work in isolation and don't get
the necessary feedback from empirically qualified professionals on what's working or
not working in their material, or how to fix it. Consequently, they're doomed to
repeat mistakes they may not even aware of, falling into a cycle of rejection from
agents and editors that they can't understand. The SCWC is all about providing
writers access to this vibrant, resourceful community in order to troubleshoot
problematic aspects in their material, make crucial publishing connects, understand
the latest trends in the business and better their odds of getting published."

With over 50 day- and nighttime sessions workshop leaders and speakers for the
February conference include breakout authors Amy Wallen ("Moonpies and Movie
Stars"), Robert Gregory Browne ("Kiss Her Goodbye") and Alexandra Sokoloff ("The
Harrowing") -- each with a two-book deal resulting from their debut titles --
best-selling international thriller writer Barry Eisler ("The Last Assassin"), young
adult novelist Laura Preble ("The Queen Geek Social Club") and many others
representing a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres, as well as agents and
editors looking for new clients.

The next SCWC event takes place in San Diego, CA, Feb. 16-18, 2007. For complete
